What's happening?

November 2009

Awatea Basin Construction begins. To help get development underway, and to address storm water issues in the area, a large storm water basin is to be built on Awatea Road. This is a Christchurch City Council project, with assistance from Ngai Tahu Property.

August 2009

Plan Change 24 lodged with Council. The rezoning process has started for the remaining 152 hectares at Wigram. By mid-2012, we expect land to be available for the development of around 1300 residential lots, as well as commercial, business and education zones.

June 2009

Consent granted for subdivision Stage 1. This allows the subdivision of land previously rezoned to residential under Plan Change 12.

September 2007

Plan Change 12 adopted by Council. This rezoned around 30 hectares of land to a combination of Living 1 and Living 3 residential zones.

The first section releases.

Stage 1 of the Wigram development is consented and ready to go. It will see the development of around 300 lots, with work planned to start on the initial release of 62 sections by mid-2010. More information will be available soon, but right now you can see what the first release and the completed subdivision will look like by clicking on the links below.

Your key questions answered.

What is a Plan Change?

This is a process we go through to bring about a change in the City Plan Zoning for a particular piece of land. You can get further information on the Plan Change process, and how to make a submission, by contacting Scott Blair at the Christchurch City Council District Planning Team – Strategic Support Unit (scott.blair@ccc.govt.nz).

How long will the development take and how many people will live there?

Once complete, the Wigram development will be home to more than 3500 people spread over approximately 1600 residential sections. The length of the project will be determined by a number of factors, but you can get an idea of how long it will take by clicking here [PDF 622KB].

Will there be a choice of section sizes?

Yes. Wigram will be made up of three different residential densities, which means there will be a section size to suit all needs. Click here [PDF 334KB] to see the proposed land uses and how the residential densities will be distributed.

Will there be vital community elements such as parks, bus routes and cycles networks?

Yes. These are key considerations in the plan developed by our urban designers. You can see what they’ve come up with by viewing the following document:
